Innocence

"Ahh, life was so much fun and happy when we were children.”  This is something I had been wondering about in my recent past. What happens to the joys of life when we grow in age? What is it about childhood that makes it less tiresome, more enjoyable and joyful than youth and adulthood?

Innocence it is. Innocence is the secret ingredient that helps us experience and live life beyond its practicality. Yes, maturity is to be cultivated as we grow up but we don’t and should not wash away our innocence completely. Innocence is a virtue of happiness that has to be preserved throughout our life. We just have to learn when and where to act and think maturely.

Intellect and practical thinking are definitely needed to be able to survive life but to live it we need innocence. To enjoy a joke or a magic show without trying to find the tricks behind it and expressing the disbelief in real magic, to appreciate a poetic phrase without calling it lame, to appreciate a piece of art or literature, to believe in miracles and most importantly to have unshakeable faith on something or someone without proof, we need innocence. Faith in wonders, in overcoming the problems smoothly, in living a life of our dreams and in being the best in the world that we have in childhood due to our innocence is what helps us live without having to worry about anything and to be truly happy. Innocence also keeps us away from negative emotions like jealousy. During our primary school, when our friends used to bring a new pencil or a colourful pencil box or bag to school, we were never jealous. Instead, we would admire it and realize how much we love it and at the max, we used to want one for ourselves.

Thus, keeping the child and the innocence in us alive throughout helps us live a mentally healthy, joyful and beautiful life.
